Changing Mindsets For Antarctica
By Christopher Ortiz | July 30, 2010
Traveling to Antarctica on two separate occasions was a woman who has always said that she did not prefer to be exposed to cold weather making her the least favorable candidate for this kind of voyage. A way to return to the area is what the woman desires. Aware of the fact that no other place was as cold on earth was this lady. Doing what she did came from the desire to be involved in what only a few people have been able to accomplish.
Finding herself working 825 miles from the South Pole, she was actually working as one of the support crew for scientists at McMurdo Station on the Ross Ice Shelf. They called her a general field assistant, but today that will make her a go for. There will be no trip unless she read Survival in Antarctica by the National Science Foundation first. Other requirements include immunizations and an extensive physical exam. Explaining why these are vital is the lack of medical facilities there.
When it comes to medical assistance, the way to be given the treatment you need involves a helicopter flying you out of the area and this can cost the government a lot of money not to mention cause harm to other people. After her arrival in Antarctica she was instructed to go to an outdoor survival school. If she cannot locate the base then she will know how to make a sleeping shelter and she will recognize crevasse fields as well.
Using a covered path the bathroom with four lavatories and two showers were led on from the tent. Only a two minute shower a week is permitted for personnel as what was said on a sign. Only flush when it is needed. Such a rule applies until further notice. That station may catch fire and when it does they could be prepared. Not only in the water plant but other equipment used in sub zero temperatures throughout the day suffered from mechanical problems.
When this happened, everybody had to cut back on water. They saw to it that enough water was available for drinking and cooking purposes. But anything after drinking water, like flushing toilets or taking showers or doing laundry, was out of the question.
When it comes to phone calls, there are also certain limitations. If you need to make a call you should put yourself on the waiting list so that your call can be put through if the weather is good enough. Ham radio operators were generally part of the communications link.
Among the things they needed to endure over there, the cold was the most difficult one. Lasting from October through December was the summer that can measure at a temperature of 32 degrees. As January arrives, temperatures will change again. If there was a wind chill or the like she would note them down in her diaries.
Depending on the weather, you may need a work buddy. It can also interfere with outdoor travel. This is forbidden in extremely harsh weather conditions. Being isolated gave her time to get to know herself. Changes happened to her. What she was before the trip was a very boastful person. She is more aware that she cannot control everything that happens. She’s not as paranoid as before.
There’s something about that continent. Being able to walk on a continent where only a few if not zero people have been to before is rather remarkable. This is considering how man has been everywhere. From the rivers, the timber, to the mountains, man has been there.

Taroko Gorge, Taiwan
By Mark Edwards | July 30, 2010
Taroko Gorge National Park is the main reason to visit Hualien, a city on Taiwan’s eastern side. Spanish prospectors knew of its golden bounty before it became one of Taiwan’s top tourism spots, but you certainly don’t go there for a history lesson. The town, only 150 years old, is the gateway for stunning Taroko Gorge where you’ll find 19km of river lying below forested slopes.
From Taipei catch the easy, two hour train to Hualien. If you can, sit on the left side of the train to get clear views of the stunning coastline. Taiwan is not called the beautiful island for nothing! In Taroko Gorge itself, you’ll see waterfalls, vegetation coming down the cliffs and the blue river running throughout. Hiking trails abound, meaning you can easily find your own secluded spot. There are also plenty of chances to see animals throughout the park, and maybe even encounter one of several species of boar.
Accommodation options in Hualien are rather varied, but there are no Taroko Gorge hotels! Hualien seldom fills up and there are good prices to be found within walking distance of the train station. Hostels are also available for people on a major budget.
To get to Taroko Gorge National Park from Hualien, you can:
1. Use a tour company. Dozens of tour companies offer bus or coach tours from Hualien. They’re not hard to find.
2. Use a scooter. It will take around 1/3 of an hour to make the journey. Have an international, or preferably a Taiwan driving licence.
3. Hire a taxi. Every taxi driver in Hualien will be willing to take you to Taroko Gorge. You can also find English-speaking drivers who will act as a private Taroko Gorge Tour for as little as US$20 a day. With a local expert you will not have the same feeling of exploration, but you will be able to find areas tour buses won’t go and cover much more ground than hiking.

Concierge To The Rescue Once Again!
By Paul Horsley | July 30, 2010
My wife was recently traveling to a meeting while driving on interstate 94. Unbeknown to her as she approached Minneapolis, major construction had begun that morning. As she approached, a construction exit sign ushered all traffic off the highway and dumped them into the city.
The sign stated to exit now. Without further notice, she found herself in downtown traffic jam with hundreds of other cars and no detour signs to assist with directions. Her meeting was scheduled for 8:30 sharp. She was now in a bind as time was becoming compressed. She did not have a map and without any signage, traffic was a mess. Without missing a step, she picked up her phone and called her concierge from our favorite travel and vacation booking website.
So… you never heard of this before? Let me help you. The next time you book an airline ticket with this web site, you will receive 30 minutes of free concierge service. You can use it anytime. Ask them anything. This is what they are there for. Try it once, you will love it and be hooked like we are!
So, as I was saying… she got on the phone with the concierge and told him the situation. He started by asking her some simple questions like what city, street names are you around, and where are you trying to go.
The concierge is always sitting in front of a computer, and before long had researched the Minnesota highway department’s web site for road closures. Apparently the highway department failed to tell anyone about this closing. Not good! The concierge began to give her step-by-step guidance back to the highway on the other side of the city.
After 30 minutes of maneuvering through the city, the concierge was still on the phone with her. This was above and beyond the call of duty. This was Priceless!
In an event like this, without the concierge service this could have been horrible event for my wife. Fortunately it was not. Our belief in this company is now through the roof. We will always book our travel and vacations here. Let’s here it for Rovia! Awesome…

Can You Take Your Pet On Your RV Trip?
By Bill Hamilton | July 30, 2010
If you are getting ready to hit the road in your RV, of course, you want to take along your loved ones. You wouldn’t leave one of your kids behind, would you? So why not also take along the family pet? After all, even though your pet may have four legs, it doesn’t mean that he or she isn’t a valued member of your “pack.” It is no wonder that many families take their pets when they travel in their recreational vehicles.
One major advantage to taking your cat or dog along for the trip is that you will save the expense of keeping him or her in a kennel. Not only are kennels depressing for your pets, it is also depressing for humans when they have to shell out their hard earned bucks on boarding an animal! Especially if your vacation is a week or more, those boarding costs can really add up.
So what do you need to know in advance if you plan to bring your pet with you in your RV? One main consideration is their safety. After all, they can’t just wear seatbelts like the rest of the family. In the case of a dog or cat, you will need a kennel. While a dog can wear a pet seat harness, cats really do need to travel in a carrier for their own safety.
Just like you need a good RV mattress for your trip, your pet is going to need a good pet bed. You probably want to use the same one that you use at home. Also make sure that you bring some toys to keep your pet busy on the road. Also don’t forget the food and water bowls. Your dog will need plenty of water, especially if you are traveling to a hot climate.
If you are bringing a dog with you on your journey, it is recommended to stop every 3-4 hours so that he or she can stretch, get some water and go to the bathroom. Be sure to always keep your dog on a leash. If your dog were to get lost, after all, it would quickly ruin your vacation. You can also find leashes for cats that will allow them to go to the bathroom outside. Having a litter box inside your RV would not exactly be a pleasant experience.
When you are traveling with your pets, it is important to be aware of your own safety as well as theirs. If you pay attention to their comfort on the road, they will be sure to have a great time too.
