The Top Five Benefits To Applying For And Obtaining Second Citizenship.

By Rene Schroeder | June 17, 2009

Thinking about obtaining second citizenship? Good idea. Second citizenship, also called dual citizenship, means that you hold a passport in two different countries. Essentially, you have citizenship in both nations which can double your chances of seeing the world and enjoying whats beyond your backyard.

First of all, imagine this: you are at the airport trying to get home, battling the constant traffic and there are two lines: domestic passport holders or international passport holders. If you are in your own home country, then you can choose which line to go through, depending on which one is shorter. This makes the entire passport and immigration process a lot easier and stress free.

Many people that travel frequently to other countries have dual citizenship to save money. Visas are cheaper for certain countries. Some countries feel that Americans are all rich and will charge Americans more as a way of making up the cost for their citizens to get a U.S. visa. Unfair? Perhaps, but it’s the way things are done in different countries.

Its unfair, yes, but, with a second passport, you can easily get around this and save a lot of money on overseas travel.

Freedom- with the constant threat of terrorism, many people with a second passport can choose which passport to choose when traveling. This can make it a lot easier to go in and out of various countries, especially if your initial citizenship is closely connected to terrorism.

Safety- many American citizens have discovered that have dual citizenship means they do not have to worry about the question of safety overseas. Unfortunately there are many countries that do not see Americans in the best the light which is why it is great to travel under a different national status.

Although it may seem like you are covering up the truth, this is not the case. After all, you are a citizen to both countries. Why not use both passports to your advantage?

Choice- finally, dual citizenship means that you can choice where to live, where to vote, where to work, where to travel, where to attend school and where to start a life. Your kids will also have this option which is something many people can only dream of.

Obtaining a second passport is actually not as hard as many people think. You may actually be eligible for dual citizenship and not even realize it if your parents or grandparents were born in another country. If not, you can obtain second citizenship by getting residency through immigration, paying the applicable fees, passing a citizenship test and then applying for a second passport. Its most certainly worth looking in to.
