The travel industry has been completely turned upside down by the progression of the Internet over the last five to ten years. We can now book business travel, bargain breaks, weekend city breaks, beach holidays and luxury holidays online and a good number of us do. 55% of holidays are now booked online and an additional 17% are researched online and then booked over the phone, according to a Nielsen/Netratings survey.
The best example of this is in luxury holidays, which would in the past have included a long trip to a travel agencies, probably one specialising in luxury holidays, but now more than half do this on the Internet, and we now look at the reasons for this:

As these holidays are expensive, they would probably have required several trips to specialist travel agencies to make sure you have made the right selection. Here are the three main reasons that booking luxury holidays online hold an advantage:
Information Going in to a travel agency, you are likely to encounter somebody who is hungry for commission and will do everything they can to talk up their chose companies and destinations. Even if you get an agent who honestly speaks about places, they will only have limited knowledge and a lot of it will not be based on experience. However if you go on the Internet, you can read independent reviews by real people about destinations and travel companies quickly, and look at many in a short period of time. This means you should be able to make a much more well informed decision on your luxury holiday destination.
Information Due to the prevalence of information on the Internet, you will now have more information than an old travel agent will have done. You can check out the travel company before booking and without talking to somebody who is biased because they work for them, and more importantly you can see what real people who have been to the destinations have to say about them. This gives you a much more impartial view, and this extended knowledge will give you a great insight into your decision. This is great for anybody spending large amounts of money on luxury holidays, as it means you are less likely to pick somewhere that doesn’t meet expectations.
Time and Convenience The price comparison engines will make your research much quicker as you will be able to look at all prices at once. Also, when you are checking the information you can look at a number of specialist destinations in one night instead of different agencies and you can research all of your shortlist of destinations at once. The best part of using the Internet is that you can do it whenever you fancy, in your pyjamas, in the bath (careful!)… wherever! You can also do it on a Sunday afternoon when everywhere is closed, or in the middle of the night if you so wish! These are many compelling reasons to book luxury holidays online, and even though this is unfortunately forcing some high street travel agencies to close, the benefits are so high that it is difficult to ignore the Internet phenomenon.
